When a devastating flood stripped this home’s lower level down to the studs, we saw an incredible silver lining: the opportunity to replace a conventional rec room with a deeply cinematic, dark academia-inspired sanctuary. Instead of playing it safe during the rebuild, our clients wanted a show-stopping retreat—a space designed for intimate late-night conversations, chess matches over scotch, and effortless hosting.

The heart of the space is a bespoke wet bar crafted in high-gloss emerald green cabinetry. To create an instant heirloom feel, we inset brass wire mesh into the cabinet doors, installed antiqued mirror backsplash panels that softly bounce ambient light, and crowned the space with a marbled wallpaper ceiling. A dramatic, dark-veined marble countertop and brass starburst hardware complete the rich, tactile palette, while integrated picture lights cast a warm, gallery-like glow over curated art and vintage glassware.

Transitioning into the lounge, the mood deepens. We enveloped the media room in rich, moody millwork, grounding the space with a plush deep-charcoal sofa, a vintage leather accent chair, and a fur ottoman that doubles as a game table. In the adjacent dining nook, a custom navy velvet banquette is framed by dark blue walls, brass candle sconces, and an iconic collection of Fornasetti wall plates.

By turning a structural disaster into a design triumph, this project proves that a home bar should be far more than just a place to pour drinks—it can be the most compelling room in the house.
